A massive explosion at a fertilizer plant in the small Texas town of West left at least two people dead, leveled several homes and prompted a widescale evacuation in the community of 2,600 people.
“It was a like a nuclear bomb went off,” Mayor Tommy Muska said. “Big old mushroom cloud. There are a lot of people that got hurt. There are a lot of people that will not be here tomorrow.”
Fire officials fear that the number of casualties could rise as high as 60 to 70 dead, said Dr. George Smith, the emergency management system director of the city.

The blast took place at the West Fertilizer Plant, about 18 miles north of Waco, about 8:50 p.m. ET.
It sent a massive fireball into the sky. Flames leaped over the roof of a structure and a plume of smoke rose high into the air.
“There are lots of houses that are leveled within a two-block radius,” Smith said. “A lot of other homes are damaged as well outside that radius.”
He estimated that between 10 to 15 buildings were demolished and about 50 damaged.
And the danger may not be over.
Risk remains
Residents are being evacuated because officials are worried that another tank at the facility might explode.
“What we are hearing is that there is one fertilizer tank that is still intact at the plant, and there are evacuations in place to make sure everyone gets away from the area safely in case of another explosion,” said Ben Stratmann, a spokesman for Texas State Sen. Brian Birdwell.
Firefighters at the scene said they were concerned about anhydrous ammonia, a pungent gas with suffocating fumes that is used as a fertilizer.
When exposed to humans, it can cause severe burns if it combines with water in the body.
And exposure to high concentrations can lead to death.

State troopers in gas masks set up roadblocks, waving away cars coming off the highway.
The Federal Aviation Administration instituted a flight restriction over the town. Schools will be closed for the rest of the week, and officials urged everyone to stay away from school property.
Shortly after the explosion, more than 60 patients streamed into Hillcrest Hospital in Waco, suffering from “blast injuries, orthopedic injuries (and) a lot of lacerations,” said hospital CEO Glenn Robinson.
While some of the injuries are minor, others are “quite serious,” he said.
The West Fertilizer Plant is just north of Waco. A nursing home with 133 residents was near the plant.
‘It was intense’
Tommy Alford, who works in a convenience store about three miles from the plant, told CNN that several volunteer firefighters were at the store when they spotted smoke.
Alford said the firefighters headed toward the scene and then between five and 10 minutes later, he heard a massive explosion.
“It was massive; it was intense,” Alford said.
Cheryl Marak, who sits on West’s city council, said the impact of the blast knocked her to the ground.
“It demolished both the houses there, mine and my mom’s and it killed my dog,” she said.
Other residents had similar stories.
“It was like a bomb went off,” said Barry Murry, who lives about a mile away from the plant. “There were emergency vehicles everywhere. It has been overwhelming.”

(CNN) — Two bombs struck near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, turning a celebration into a bloody scene of destruction.
The blasts threw people to the ground, killing two and injuring dozens.
The Boston Globe reported that more than 100 people were being treated at area hospitals, including several children.
“Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups, will feel the full weight of justice,” President Barack Obama vowed.
‘Like a huge cannon’
The terrorist attack, near the marathon’s finish line, triggered widespread screaming and chaos, shattered windows and barricades and sent smoke billowing into the air at Copley Square.
They were about 50 to 100 yards apart, officials said.
“It felt like a huge cannon,” a witness told CNN about one of theblasts.
The bombs shook buildings, sending people to seek shelter under tables, witnesses said.
Federal authorities are classifying the bombings as a terrorist attack, but it’s not clear whether the origin was domestic or foreign, a federal law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation said.
Another explosive device found
Authorities in Boston found at least one other explosive device that they were dismantling, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said.
Davis said a third blast at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library was believed to be related to the marathon bombings, but police later said that incident was believed to be fire-related. The library said all staff and visitors are safe.
It was unclear who may have planted the marathon bombs. There were no credible threats before the race, a state government official said.
As authorities searched the scene, numerous suspicious packages were found, possibly because people fled the area, leaving items behind. Investigators were checking them.
The Marriott hotel at Copley Place was evacuated as a precaution.
The Lenox Hotel was also evacuated as a precaution, the Boston Globe reported.
Numerous hospitals treat the wounded
Massachusetts General Hospital said it was treating 22 injured people, six of them in critical condition. Tufts Medical Center reported that it was treating nine people. Brigham and Women’s Hospital said it received between 18 and 20 injured. Boston Medical Center reported 20 patients from the marathon, most with lower leg injuries.
Boston Children’s Hospital was treating seven injured people — six children and a parent of one of the children. Their conditions range from “good to serious,” a hospital spokeswoman said.
Carney Hospital in Dorchester, Massachusetts, reported receiving four or five patients, none in serious condition.
Combined, that brings the number of injured to as many as 82. There are other hospitals in the Boston area as well.
The full number of casualties was not immediately known, Davis said.
Crowds were in the area watching the runners.
‘Horrific day’
“This is a horrific day in Boston,” Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick said in a statement.
The Federal Aviation Administration placed a flight restriction over the site of the blasts.
Other cities, including New York and Washington, tightened security as a result. Following standard protocol, the White House cleared out an area in front of the West Wing.
On Charles Street, between Boylston and Beacon streets, there was a huge police presence, and SWAT team members toted rifles.
“If you see something, say something,” Mark Boughton, mayor of Danbury, Connecticut, wrote on Twitter. “All cities will be on a heightened state of alertness per Homeland Security protocols.”
The explosions occurred at about 2:45 p.m., more than two hours after the first of the race’s nearly 27,000 runners had crossed the finish line, CNN Producer Matt Frucci reported.
The race was halted as was subway service into the area.
Runners east of Massachusetts Avenue were directed to Boston Common; those west of Massachusetts Avenue were directed to Kenmore Square, the state’s emergency management agency said.
Troops from the Massachusetts National Guard were assisting police as well.
One doctor in a medical tent about 150 yards from the explosion said he was immediately mobilized.
“We all went running over there and started to bring people into the medical tent,” he said. “It was not good. Very bad. Like a war zone. 9/11 immediately came to mind.”
Runner Carly Lissak, of Arlington, Texas, who turned 20 Monday, had crossed the finish line about five minutes before the explosions.
She was in the medical tent when she heard the explosions. “It sounded like thunder and the ground shook a little,” Lissak said.

JERUSALEM — Calling the U.S. Israel’s “greatest friend,” President Barack Obama assured the Middle East ally of his administration’s commitment to Israel’s security while cautioning that the region’s “winds of change bring both promise and peril.”
Obama declared common cause with Israel, noting that it was the first stop of the first trip of his second term. “As I begin my second term as President, Israel is the first stop on my first foreign trip. This is no accident. So I see this visit as an opportunity to reaffirm the unbreakable bonds between our nations, to restate America’s unwavering commitment to Israel’s security, and to speak directly to the people of Israel and to your neighbors. And that is why I’m confident in declaring that our alliance is eternal, it is forever.” Obama said upon arriving in Tel Aviv.

Israeli President Shimon Peres welcomed Obama, asserting that “A world without America’s leadership, without her moral voice, would be a darker world. A world without your friendship, would invite aggression against Israel.”
Obama’s trip is his first visit to the country — and only his second to the Middle East, outside of a quick jaunt to Iraq — since taking office. He will also be making his first trips as president to the Palestinian Authority and Jordan this week. But on an itinerary laden more with symbolism than substance, an Israel that is increasingly wary of developments in Syria and Iran is Obama’s main focus.
Adding yet another dimension to the trip, Obama landed amid new questions about the Syrian regime’s possible use of chemical weapons.
As he arrived, Obama joked to Netanyahu that he was “getting away from Congress.”

So even though U.S. officials have set expectations low and previewed no significant policy announcements, there is a clear metric to measure the success of Obama’s three-day stay in Israel and the West Bank: how much he is able to reverse the perception that his administration is not fully committed to Israel’s security.
The centerpiece of the first leg of the trip will be a speech to Israeli university students on Thursday, during which Obama is expected to renew U.S. assurances to stand by Israel as it seeks to counter threats from Iran and protect its people in the midst of civil war in neighboring Syria, where new questions were raised Tuesday about the Assad regime’s possible use of chemical weapons.
Ahead of Obama’s visit, an Israeli Cabinet minister, Yuval Steinitz, said it is “apparently clear” that chemical weapons were recently used in Syria, and that the alleged attack will be a main topic of conversation with the president. The Obama administration said Tuesday it had no evidence to support the regime’s claims that rebels were responsible for a chemical attack.
Obama has declared the use, deployment or transfer of the weapons would be a “red line” for possible military intervention by the U.S. in the Syrian conflict.
Once in Jerusalem, a potent religious symbol as well as one of the main obstacles to an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal. When Obama got to Bethlehem, security had cleared visitors after Manger Square. Obama then toured the Church of the Nativity, built atop the cave where Jesus is believed to have been born. Onlookers watched in silence, with no sign of the enthusiasm which usually greets the convoy. Some held up signs of protest.

Obama will make an almost perfunctory visit to the cash-strapped Palestinian Authority’s headquarters in the West Bank, where he will meet embattled Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to assure him that an independent Palestinian state remains a U.S. foreign policy and national security priority. Despite not coming with any new plan to get the stalled peace process back on track, Obama plans to make clear that his administration intends to keep trying to get talks relaunched.
Israel repeatedly has threatened to take military action should Iran appear to be on the verge of obtaining a bomb. The U.S. has pushed for more time to allow diplomacy and economic penalties to run their course, though Obama insists military action is an option.
Obama will close out his Mideast trip with a 24-hour stop in Jordan, an important U.S. ally, where his focus will be on the violence in Syria. More than 450,000 Syrians have fled to Jordan, crowding refugee camps and overwhelming aid organizations.
In his talks with Jordan’s King Abdullah, Obama also will try to shore up the country’s fledgling attempts to liberalize its government and stave off an Arab Spring-style movement similar to the ones that have taken down leaders elsewhere in the region.

Draped in a red and gold mantle lined with snow-white ermine, Benedict clasped the cardinals’ hands as they removed their distinctive red skullcaps to greet him and kiss his ring. “Among you is also the future pope, whom I promise my unconditional reverence and obedience,” Benedict told the cardinals, reflecting the concern among Vatican watchers about what it will mean to have two popes residing in the Vatican.

While John Paul was raised as a Pole under Nazi occupation or Communist tyranny, Joseph Ratzinger spent most of his adult life in postwar West Germany, where secularism and consumer society held sway.
In a homily shortly after John Paul’s death, Benedict identified “the dictatorship of relativism” as the principal problem facing both society and the modern church. While it “recognizes nothing as definitive,” it turns “the self and its desires” into the only basis for truth and for action.
“One of the great themes of Pope Benedict’s pontificate has been to show the importance that reason has for a life of faith and the importance faith has for all of those who use their minds,” said Monsignor McPartlan.
To counter those trends in the rich, secularized West, Benedict promoted “the new evangelization.” In deliberate contrast with the image of spreading the Gospel to new areas, the “new evangelization” seeks to reawaken and revive it in nations, especially in Europe, that have been culturally Christian for centuries.
Scandal
Beyond his work within the church, Benedict’s legacy will be judged in part by his handling of the church’s sex-abuse crisis, both because of the decades of abuse itself and the role the church’s bishops played in covering up for abusive priests.
Unlike John Paul, he personally met with victims of clergy sex abuse on several of his foreign trips, including one to the U.S. He also issued an unprecedented apology to Irelands Catholics over decades of systematic sex abuse and told guilty clergy to “submit yourselves to the demands of justice.”
Benedict also moved strongly against the Legion of Christ, ordering a full-scale reworking of an order that had enjoyed the favor of John Paul but whose now-repudiated founder, Father Marcial Maciel, had serially abused seminarians and fathered at least three children.
“So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They crush people with unbearable religious demands and never lift a finger to ease the burden. Everything they do is for show. Bergoglio, 76 (13), is a Jesuit from Buenos Aires and is the first pope from South America. He is also the first pope to take the name of Francis.
Pope Francis is unique not just for being the first Latin American pope. He’s also the first Jesuit pope, possibly signaling a renewed emphasis on traditional Catholic theology by the church.

MOSCOW—A meteorite plunged to earth in Russia’s Ural Mountains Friday, exploding into flames in a powerful blast that smashed windows and injured around 1,000 people.
Amateur videos broadcast on state television showed an object streaking across the sky trailing smoke around 9:20 a.m. local time before bursting into a fireball. Residents in the city of Chelyabinsk, the largest in the affected region, described a shock wave that blew in doors, smashed glass and set off car alarms.
“The light was so intense that it completely illuminated the courtyard of our apartment block,” said Sergei Zakharov, head of the Russian Geographical Society in Chelyabinsk. “The sound, the shock wave came around six minutes later. No one could understand what had happened. I’d compare it to the explosion of a large flare bomb.”
The Emergency Situations Ministry said almost 1,000 people sought medical attention, mostly for cuts from flying glass. Forty-three people were hospitalized with injuries. Around 3,000 buildings were damaged by the blast, which blew a hole in the walls of a metals factory in Chelyabinsk, approximately 1,500 kilometers east of Moscow.
The unusual sight sowed confusion among some locals. Amateur video showed children in one school streaming out of a classroom and screaming.
“We didn’t understand what was happening. We thought an airplane had crashed,” said a woman who answered the phone at the city administration but declined to give her name.
“That kind of light doesn’t happen in life, only at the end of the world,” Vlada Palagina, a Chelyabinsk schoolteacher, told the LifeNews website.
Officials moved quickly to calm residents, saying there was no threat to human life from the rock fragments. Most of the meteorite burned up before pieces hit the ground outside Chelyabinsk, scientists said.
President Vladimir Putin ordered the emergency situations minister to provide help for those affected.
“There’s no major destruction,” Chelyabinsk regional Governor Mikhail Yuyevich wrote on his blog. “The main task now is to maintain heat in the apartments and offices where the glass was smashed.”
“There have been reports of one or two people being injured in the past. This is entirely unprecedented,” said Keith Smith, an astronomer at Britain’s Royal Astronomical Society.
Dr. Smith stressed that there was no connection between the meteor event in Russia and the swimming-pool-sized asteroid that is expected to harmlessly pass about 28,000 kilometers from earth on Friday.
Planetary scientist Samuel Kounaves at Tufts University in Boston also said there likely was no connection between the meteor strike in Russia and the record close approach Friday of asteroid 2012 DA14, a 130,000-ton rock which was expected to narrowly miss the planet by about 17,200 miles. “It probably had nothing to do with the meteorite that hit Russia,” he said.
Asteroids are fairly small pieces of rock that go around the sun. A meteoroid is an even smaller piece of debris or particle that goes around the sun. A meteorite, on the other hand, is a meteoroid that survives its atmosphere plunge and lands upon the earth’s surface.
Dozens of fragments of the meteorite hit the ground, officials said, and search teams set out looking for remains. Local police described how one piece smashed into the ground near Lake Chebarkul, throwing up a column of ice, water and steam and creating an eight-meter crater.
The meteorite was several meters in diameter and weighed around 10 metric tons, Russia’s Academy of Sciences said in a statement. “The object entered the atmosphere at a speed of 15-20 kilometers per second, disintegrated at a height of 30-50 kilometers. The movement of fragments at large speed caused a powerful emission of light and a strong shock wave,” the academy said.
It is only every 2,000 years or so that a meteoroid the size of a football field descends to earth and causes significant damage, according to NASA. Giant asteroids that crash to earth—such as the one that most likely extinguished the dinosaurs—tend to occur on the scale of millions of years.
Scientists will likely rush to the site in Russia where the meteoroid was observed. Astronomer Dr. Smith said there has probably been only one case—in Sudan in 2007—where researchers were able to follow the track of a meteor as it came down and recover pieces of it on the ground.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin called for leading world powers to create an early-warning system, and consider technology to shoot down meteorites. Roskosmos, Russia’s space agency, said it was impossible to track objects falling as fast as the meteorite.

Fugitive ex-LAPD officer Christopher Dorner, whose alleged murder spree began with the shooting death of the daughter of a police union lawyer who defended him in an internal investigation, re-surfaced Tuesday in a stolen white pickup truck in the San Bernardino Mountains.
“Enough is enough. It’s time for you to turn yourself in. It’s time to stop the bloodshed,” LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith said earlier in the day at a news conference held outside police headquarters in Los Angeles.
He said he would get even with those who wronged him as part of his plan to reclaim his good name. “You’re going to see what a whistleblower can do when you take everything from him especially his name.” the rant said. “You have awoken a sleeping giant.”
The cabin continued to burn more than 90 minutes after the fire started, but sources familiar with the operation said the fire department would arrive at the site once the road was cleared.

JERUSALEM – Prophecy websites are having a field day with the worldwide attention President Obama is getting for sparring with a fly yesterday. News reports have recounted Obama’s history of attracting flies during recorded interviews and speeches.
Already, religious and other websites are using the headlines to point out that a biblical reference for Satan, the Semitic deity Beelzebub, literally translates from Hebrew into “Lord of the Flies.”
As Obama nominated two new members of his second administration yesterday, a swarming fly stole the show.
“This guy is bothering me here,” said Obama, who repeatedly swatted at a large black fly buzzing near his face.
The London Telegraph noted a White House pool report said “the president spoke for about five minutes while being menaced by a house fly.”
This was not the president’s first brush with a fly while the cameras were rolling.
In 2010, Obama halted a speech about health care reform as a fly zipped around him.
During a June 2009 CNBC interview, Obama killed a fly on camera.
“Get out of here,” the president said with his eyes on the fly before the interview began. When the fly persisted, he killed it with a single blow.
“That was pretty impressive, wasn’t it?” said Obama of his feat. “I got the sucker.”
In a 2008 campaign appearance, Obama halted a local interview after a swarm of flies had gathered around him.
Those reaching to connect Obama’s fly troubles with the darkest biblical references won’t have much difficulty.
One name commonly used to refer to Satan is Beelzebub, which translates from Hebrew into “Lord of the Flies.”
“Beelzebub” is the Greek form of the name “Baal-zebub,” a pagan Philistine god worshiped in the ancient Philistine city of Ekron during the Old Testament times. It referenced the god of the fly which was worshiped to obtain deliverance from the injuries of that insect. Some biblical scholars believe it was also known as “the god of filth” which later became a name of bitter scorn in the mouth of the Pharisees. As a result, he was a particularly contemptible deity and was used by the Jews as an epithet for Satan.
The End Times blog named Obama the “Lord of the Flies.”
Over at RevalationNow.net, a posting by “editorial staff” muses about whether Obama is possessed by a demonic entity.
“I feel like I am watching a horror movie and the secret evil character is revealed by the evil signs around him,” the post reads.
Beelzebub is first referenced in 2 Kings 1:2-3, 6, 16, in which Beelzebub is described as the god of the Philistine city of Ekron.
Jewish scholars have interpreted the title “Lord of Flies” as the Hebrew way of comparing followers of the Canaanite deity Baal to flies.
The name Beelzebub is found throughout the New Testament, mostly as a reference to the prince of demons.
In Mark 3:22, the Pharisees accuse Jesus of driving out demons by the power of Beelzebul, prince of demons. The name also appears in the expanded version in Matthew 12:24, 27 and Luke 11:15, 18-19.
