SWAT team moves in, fire engulfs cabin where Dorner believed to be

Smoke rises a fire at the cabin where accused triple murderer Christopher Dorner is believed to be holed up in mountains above Los Angeles, February 13, 2013.

Four people have died as the result of fired 33-year-old Christopher Jordan Dorner’s alleged killing spree. Tuesday afternoon, Dorner was holed up in a burning cabin in the woods near Big Bear Lake.

Fugitive ex-LAPD officer Christopher Dorner, whose alleged murder spree began with the shooting death of the daughter of a police union lawyer who defended him in an internal investigation, re-surfaced Tuesday in a stolen white pickup truck in the San Bernardino Mountains.

“Enough is enough. It’s time for you to turn yourself in. It’s time to stop the bloodshed,” LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith said earlier in the day at a news conference held outside police headquarters in Los Angeles.

He said he would get even with those who wronged him as part of his plan to reclaim his good name. “You’re going to see what a whistleblower can do when you take everything from him especially his name.” the rant said. “You have awoken a sleeping giant.”

The cabin continued to burn more than 90 minutes after the fire started, but sources familiar with the operation said the fire department would arrive at the site once the road was cleared.

As the manhunt appeared to reach a crisis point - with two law enforcement officers dead and flames leaping from a cabin where Dorner had holed up in the woods - we take a look at the numbers in the case so far.

11: Days that have passed since the manhunt for Dorner began, starting with a shooting of Monica Quan and Keith Lawrence in Irvine on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 2, and ending Tuesday, as he was barricaded in a cabin in the mountains.

Serbia’s NATO ambassador leaps to death

Shocked friends say Branislav Milinkovic did not appear distraught before he plunged to his death.

Serbia’s ambassador to NATO was chatting and joking with colleagues in a parking garage at Brussels Airport when he suddenly strolled to a barrier, climbed over and flung himself to the ground below, a diplomat said.

By the time his shocked colleagues reached him, Branislav Milinkovic was dead.

His motives are a mystery. Three diplomats who knew Milinkovic said he did not appear distraught in the hours leading up to his death Tuesday night. He seemed to be going about his regular business, picking up an arriving delegation of six Serbian officials who were due to hold talks with NATO, the alliance that went to war with his country just 13 years ago.

A former author and activist opposed to the authoritarian regime of Serbia’s former strongman Slobodan Milosevic, he was a respected diplomat and leading intellectual, officials said.

The diplomats, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release details, said they knew of no circumstances — private or professional — that would have prompted him to take his own life.

One of the diplomats described the death to The Associated Press, saying she had spoken to a member of the delegation who had witnessed the leap from the 8- to 10-meter-high (26- to 33-foot-high) platform.

The diplomats all spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not permitted by foreign service regulations to speak publicly to the press.

Speaking in Brussels, Serbia’s Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said that “Belgian police are investigating, but it’s obviously a suicide. It’s hard to figure out the motives or causes.”

The death cast a pall on the second day of a meeting of NATO foreign ministers. Officials said they were shocked by the news of the death of a very popular and well-liked ambassador.

“NATO’s Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said he was deeply saddened by the tragic death of the Serbian ambassador,” alliance spokeswoman Carmen Romero said. “Milinkovic was a highly respected representative of his country and will be missed at NATO headquarters.”

During the 1990s, Milinkovic was active in the opposition to Milosevic. After he was ousted in 2000, Milinkovic was appointed Serbia’s ambassador to the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe, or OSCE, in Vienna.

He was transferred to NATO as Serbia’s special representative in 2004. Serbia is not a member of the military alliance, but Milinkovic was named ambassador after Belgrade joined NATO’s Partnership for Peace program, which groups neutral states.

The move to join the NATO program had angered Serbian nationalists who are now in power. They have pledged the nation will never join because of its 1999 bombing campaign, during which it forced Milosevic’s forces to withdraw from Serbia’s southern province of Kosovo.

7 dead, 3 injured in mass shooting at Wisconsin Sikh Temple

(WXYZ) - Seven people have been killed in a shooting at a Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin.

One of the dead is confirmed to be the shooter.

Police say 3 people, including a police officer, have been injured.

The police chief says they are treating the incident as a case of domestic terrorism and that both the FBI and the ATF are investigating.

Police say a 911 call came in reporting a possible shooting at the temple at around 10:25 a.m. CDT.

A police officer responded and was shot multiple times. The officer was able to return fire, shooting and, in the words of police, putting the suspect down.

The officer was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. He is described as a 20-year veteran with tactical experience.

Police say several dozen people were in the temple at the time of the shooting, getting ready for a service.

One local hospital told CNN they have received three patients from the scene. All three are men suffering from gunshot wounds to the face and extremities. They are all in critical condition.

Of the 7 people who died, four of them were killed inside the building. Three others, including the gunman, are outside.

Oak Creek is located about 20 miles south of Downtown Milwaukee. Another Sikh temple is located in nearby Brookfield, Wisconsin. Police were dispatched to that temple as a precaution following the shootings at the Oak Creek temple.

‘Dark Knight Rises’ screening shooting in suburban Denver leaves 12 dead, 59 injured: police

‘He said he was the Joker, enemy of Batman,’ Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said, adding that the madman had also painted his hair red. The suspect - identified as James Holmes, 24, a former University of Colorado medical school student - was arrested shortly after the rampage.

AURORA, Colo. — The heavily armed gunman who shot 71 people - killing 12 - at a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” near Denver boasted to cops that he was Batman’s arch nemesis.

“He said he was the Joker, enemy of Batman,” Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said after conferring with his counterpart in Aurora.

“He had his hair painted red,” Kelly added.

The suspect - identified as James Holmes, 24, a former University of Colorado medical school student - was arrested shortly after the rampage at a movie complex about 10 miles east of Denver.

The gunman burst into the packed theater through an emergency door 20 minutes into the film, set off two canisters emitting smoke or tear gas and opened fire, authorities said.
“I thought it was pretty much the end of the world,” theatergoer Robert Jones, 28, told the Denver Post.

Witnesses described the shooter methodically picking off his victims, stopping only to reload. He was packing three guns, including an assault rifle, and outfitted with full body armor.

“There were bullet (casings) just falling on my head,” Jennifer Seeger told the Associated Press.

“Every few seconds it was just: Boom, boom, boom,” she added. “He would reload and shoot, and anyone who would try to leave would just get killed.”

Ten people were found dead at the scene. Two died at local hospitals, including a 6-year-old girl.

At least 59 others were wounded, 11 critically.

The youngest victim was believed to be a four-month old infant who was treated for non-life threatening injuries and released. At least six victims were rushed to the Children’s Hospital in Aurora.
